Professor of Health Behavior and Health Education Dr. Neighbors received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1982. After three years of postdoctoral work at the Institute for Social Research, he joined the School of Public Health faculty. He is currently a Professor and Chair of Admissions for the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education as well as the CRECH Director. Dr. Neighbors research focuses on social psychiatric risk factors among African Americans, including the study of help-seeking among African Americans with serious personal problems. He was PI on a study of the prevalence of mental disorders in the State of Michigan prison system. He is currently the PI on a study of the misdiagnosis of depression and schizophrenia among African American psychiatric inpatients. He is Co-PI on a qualitative investigation of clinician attitudes toward the multicultural treatment of mental disorders. Neighbors has extensive experience in mental health survey research with both community and clinical samples. He has conducted both quantitative and qualitative analyses and has published extensively on the mental health and health behavior of African Americans. He has, for a number of years, mentored students from underrepresented ethnic groups.
